Bastrop County Rural Community

Listings in Red Rock, TX

Welcome to Red Rock, a rural Bastrop County community named for its red sandstone, set in the Lost Pines region southwest of Bastrop.

Red Rock is a census-designated place in Bastrop County, in central Texas. It lies about twelve miles southwest of the county seat of Bastrop, in the region known as the Lost Pines, an isolated stand of loblolly pines that gives this part of central Texas a distinctive landscape. The community's name is said to derive from the red sandstone used to build the chimney of the first settler's house in the early 1850s. In its earliest days the settlement was also known as Hannah Land. Red Rock grew at the crossing of the Austin-to-Port Lavaca stagecoach road and the Bastrop-to-Gonzales trail, and in 1892 the town moved a mile east to the newly laid railroad, a relocation that shaped its later development. For more than a century Red Rock has remained primarily an agricultural and cattle-raising community. Today Red Rock is a small, quiet place with a population of about 410. Its residents are served by the Bastrop-area school districts, and daily services are found in nearby Bastrop and Lockhart. The surrounding countryside is devoted to farming and ranching, and the community's rural character has held steady even as growth has spread through the region between Austin and San Antonio. Red Rock's setting in the Lost Pines places it within reach of several of central Texas's notable destinations. Bastrop State Park, with its pine forests and trails, lies to the northeast, while Lockhart, a short drive to the south, is known for its barbecue. The Colorado River valley and the city of Bastrop offer additional recreation and amenities, and Austin lies roughly thirty-five miles to the northwest. The community's red sandstone name, its railroad-era roots, and its position in the pine woods of Bastrop County give it a distinct identity among the small settlements of the region.

About Red Rock

Real Estate & Housing

Red Rock's housing stock reflects its rural, agricultural character. Homes are typically single-family houses on larger lots, with ranch-style and brick homes common, and many properties include acreage suited to farming or ranching. The community's spread-out layout means homes are interspersed with pasture and open land rather than arranged in dense subdivisions. Development is limited and low-density, preserving the rural landscape. The market is oriented toward ownership and appeals to those seeking space and a country setting within reach of Bastrop and Austin.

Neighborhoods

Red Rock does not have a conventional neighborhood structure. The community is a loose collection of homes, farms, and a few small businesses arranged along Farm Road 812 and the surrounding country roads. Properties are spread across the rolling, pine-dotted landscape, with open land separating many homes. This dispersed, rural pattern is typical of the small communities of Bastrop County and is central to Red Rock's character, distinguishing it from the more developed towns nearer Austin.

Lifestyle in Red Rock

Red Rock offers the quiet lifestyle of a rural central Texas community. Daily life centers on the surrounding farms and ranches, with the county seat of Bastrop and the town of Lockhart providing services, shopping, and employment within a short drive. The community's agricultural character has held steady for more than a century, and residents value the open countryside and the pace of life in the Lost Pines. Austin lies within commuting distance for those who work in the city, while the community itself remains distinctly rural and unhurried.

Schools & Education

Public education for Red Rock is provided by the Bastrop-area school districts that serve this part of the county, with campuses in the nearby communities. Students attend the elementary, middle, and high schools of the district serving the area. For higher education, Austin Community College, Texas State University in San Marcos, and the University of Texas at Austin are within commuting distance, offering a range of academic and workforce programs for students across the region.

Getting Around

Red Rock sits along Farm Road 812, the former Austin-to-Port Lavaca stagecoach road, which connects the community east to Bastrop and west toward the Colorado River valley. State Highway 21 and State Highway 71 pass through the broader region, providing access to Austin, roughly thirty-five miles to the northwest, and to San Antonio to the southwest. The community's rural roads keep it connected to the surrounding towns and the region's highway network while preserving its quiet, agricultural setting.

Parks & Recreation

Recreation around Red Rock is tied to the Lost Pines and the surrounding countryside. Bastrop State Park, with its loblolly pine forest, trails, and campgrounds, lies a short drive to the northeast, and the Colorado River valley offers fishing and riverside access. The rural roads of Bastrop County provide cycling and scenic drives, and hunting is part of the local culture. Lockhart, nearby, is a destination for its barbecue, and the parks and amenities of Bastrop and Austin extend recreational options for residents.
